Trekking

If trekking is your game, Rafiki Safari Tours is your operator! Because game viewing involves lots of time in our specially equipped vehicles, we often recommend that our global travelers allot some time to stretch your legs. Although several picturesque and non-strenuous hikes can be found throughout the region, we can also assist with planning a more challenging trek to the following peaks:
Tanzania:
Reaching 5,895 meters, Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s largest free standing mountain. An average trek takes seven days from the base to the summit. Although no experience is required, travelers should be advised that altitude sickness and cold temperatures may present certain challenges.
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain standing at 4,566. Some previous trekking experience is recommended before embarking on the challenging, four-day climb to the summit. For the less experienced, a one-day hike to the first hut and a view of the ash crater can also be arranged.
Ol Doinyo Lengai
Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano with cones of lava inside its crater. Treks start at midnight at 1,200 meters above sea level, and involve a strenuous, six-hour climb to the crater which is located at 2,890 meters. However, the work is indeed worth the reward – none other than a spectacular sunrise from behind Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kenya:
Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain and stands at 5,199 meters. It is highly recommended that visitors be good condition and health for the six-day trek to the mountain’s summit. With all the snow and ice at the top, it’s hard to imagine that you’re actually at the equator!
